KEIKI TAPPING – Ready for new outdoor adventures 🌳
As part of our commitment to continuous improvement, Keiki Tapping recently received an array of new outdoor resources! A new timber cubby house, outdoor table and mini parkour course were delivered last week, and the children were so excited to get outside and test them out. Some children tackled the parkour course while others preferred to chill out, setting themselves up with comfy pillows and books and turning the cubby into a reading nook. 📕
The new equipment has been a welcome addition to our dedicated outdoor OSHC space, providing options for children to relax, recharge or burn off energy before and after school. Open ended resources like these encourage imaginative play and collaboration, which in turn can assist with regulating those big emotions that come with big school! 💚

KEIKI CATALINA: Teaching the next generation of wildlife warriors 🐨 🍃
This week the children at Keiki Catalina had a very exciting visit from some furry native friends! We welcomed Nutella the koala, Willow and Ninja the snakes, Lizzy the bobtail and Tully the sugar glider from @westozwildlife, accompanied by their lovely keeper Jordan!
This incursion was an absolute hit with the children (and their educators!) and we had so much fun learning about these beautiful native animals while they climbed, ate, cuddled and slithered right in front of us! Jordan explained to the children how each animal spends their day, what they like to eat, how long they live in the wild and their conservation status.
Some children were brave enough to hold the two snakes, while others were happier approaching the fluffy koala or the sleepy little sugar glider for a pat. We were so proud to see how the children treated each animal with such respect and care, keeping their hands gentle and their voices quiet so each animal felt comfortable.
Hands on experiences like these are an excellent age-appropriate way to educate children on the importance of conserving and respecting our native wildlife, linking to Keiki’s Earth to Sky value within our philosophy 💚

CENTRE COORDINATOR SPOTLIGHT: Meet the amazing Sue! 💜
Long before Sue commenced her role as Keiki Edgewater’s Centre Coordinator in 2021, she had already forged a deep passion for early childhood development and nature-based learning over almost 20 years. She even spent seven of those years making mud pies and tree forts during her time coordinating a 42-acre forest school in England! Sue’s knowledge and expertise is a great asset to the Keiki leadership group, and is tapped into daily in her mentorship and guidance of the Keiki Edgewater team.
Having emigrated to Perth’s northern suburbs from the UK with just her husband and son, Sue has experienced the importance of building a family and support network within a new community. This has driven her dedication to building community connections for families, as well as giving back through fundraising efforts. 🙌
Sue has led Keiki’s Biggest Morning Tea fundraiser for the past two years, raising more than $8,000 for the Cancer Council. Herself and the Edgewater team will be hosting a Biggest Morning Tea event again on 24th May 2025, to get a ticket and contribute to this worthwhile cause, please visit Edgewater reception or send us an email!
Sue genuinely loves working with children and families, and everyone who walks through the front door is greeted by her warm and welcoming smile. On her weekends, she relishes spending time with her family, especially her two beautiful granddaughters. Occasionally you may also find her still enjoying the English tradition of a pint at the pub! 🍻
Thank you for the amazing work you do Sue, and for being an all-round great human! 🥰

KEIKI EDGEWATER – Celebrating our World on Earth Day 🌏
As part of Earth Day on the 22nd April, educators at Keiki Edgewater invited children to explore our natural environment and connect with the world they live in. The children in the younger rooms incorporated recycling and used recycled materials for painting, sensory play, and loose parts. They also explored a playdough representation of the Earth highlighting its colours blue and green, and enjoyed investigating a garden tuff tray using tweezers and magnifying glasses.
In the Pre-Kindy Room, children discovered a small world of frogs where they talked about the ecosystem and the different animal habitats. The children in the Kindy Room explored a nature tuff tray where different kinds of native flowers were arranged beautifully, talking about their colours, textures and how to look after them.
They also made sensory shakers using recycled bottles and natural resources.
These experiences are linked to our core value ‘Earth to Sky’, inspiring children to respect and care for their world. By building a deep love and appreciation for the environment, we can instil important sustainability values they can carry with them long after they leave our care. 💚

KEIKI HAMERSLEY - Remembering our Anzacs 🇦🇺 🇳🇿
All of our Keiki Early Learning services acknowledged Anzac Day last week, commemorating the 110-year anniversary of the landing of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps troops at Gallipoli, Turkey.
Anzac Day experiences provide an opportunity for children to learn about and recognise the immense contribution made by past and present service personnel for our country. These experiences include group discussions, ceremonies, baking of Anzac cookies, reading of books and hands-on activities, all delivered in an age-appropriate manner.
At Keiki Hamersley, the toddlers were invited to explore Anzac Day and the use of the red poppy to commemorate our soldiers via poppy-making crafts, playdough and an Anzac themed sensory tray. These activities help to support sensory play and fine motor skills, while provoking meaningful discussions about our history and the world we live in. 🌏

KEIKI MINDARIE PRIMARY: Exploring our new outdoor resources! 🏠 🍂
At Keiki, we believe a child’s learning environment is much more than just a backdrop. We value spaces that are beautiful, homely and encourage open-ended play, which is why we are constantly updating and improving our physical environments. The children at Keiki Mindarie Primary were very excited to receive some brand-new equipment in their outdoor garden at the end of term one and got stuck right into making it their own! 💚
The new timber cubby house was a fast-favourite, and the children immediately formed a team to build a fort around it and divide its interior into ‘bedrooms’ using pillows. Some of the children role-played a family home, acting as the parents, babies and pets, while others turned its back window into a shopfront, taking turns as shopkeepers and customers. 🛍️
The energy around the new outdoor elements was amazing, and it was so lovely to see the children use them as inspiration for new ways to play and expand their creativity. We can’t wait to see more imaginative play in term two! ✨

KEIKI MINDARIE KEYS: Lots of wriggly worms 🪱
The children in the Kookaburra room at Mindarie Keys had some wriggly visitors last week, when Sam and Joanna from @thewormshed brought in their team of worms and taught the children all about the important part they play in our natural ecosystems.
The children listened intently as we discussed all things worms – how they help the plants, flowers and veggies grow, how they don’t like the sun but LOVE being deep in the earth and how they are small but mighty in their impact on our environment. The children even got to help figure out what to feed the worms through a game where they had to arrange foods into a “yes” and “no” pile depending on what they thought the worms could or couldn’t eat. 🍎
The best bit of all was that the children got to construct their very own worm farm to take home! They were each given a plastic bottle and they made their way around each station carefully adding elements to build their perfect little worm home, ready to host a family of worms in their very own backyard. Learning about our natural environment and how we can each play our small part in helping it thrive is a core focus for us at Keiki, and we love seeing how passionate our little ones are about getting involved. 💚

KEIKI EDGEWATER – Visiting our Community Library 📚 💛
We believe it’s never too early for children to experience the wonder of reading, and our youngest learners in the Keiki Edgewater Nursery Room love going out for a special visit to our in-centre Community Library once a week!
Children visit the library in small groups and have the opportunity to freely explore all the books in our collection, choosing which stories they would like the Educators to read to them. After reading some stories, the babies and their educators often sing songs together or open up the blinds to look out at the world beyond Keiki Edgewater’s windows – spotting different vehicles and waving at them as they zoom by.
These internal trips to the community library are a favourite for the babies and their educators to play, relax, and watch the world go by. They help children to connect with each other outside of their usual environment, build on early language skills, and help to foster a love of reading that can continue into preschool and beyond. ✨🫶🏼

KEIKI EDGEWATER: Hopping into the Easter long weekend 🐰
Another incredible Easter hat parade is in the books at Keiki Edgewater! Our Edgewater children and their families worked so hard putting together the most extravagant Easter themed hats, and the children got to show them off during a mid-morning parade through the service. 🥰
The Easter bunny wasn’t in attendance, but Tex (our beautiful Keiki Edgewater pup) donned a beautiful blue bowler hat and lead the way! The children were so excited to see each other’s impressive headwear creations, and they loved giving Tex pats and cuddles as he passed by.
Easter is a special occasion for many of our Keiki Edgewater families, and the Easter hat parade is just the cherry on top of a week filled with Easter crafts, egg hunts and activities. 🥚

KEIKI CATALINA: Nature is our playground 🍂
A growing body of research has shown something we’ve known at Keiki for a long time – children do better outside! As part of our Nature Play Week activities, the kindy children at Keiki Catalina took a lovely stroll with their educators to their local Drimmie Park.
Some children wanted to challenge themselves physically by climbing, rolling down hills, sprinting across the grass and walking through the bush, while others preferred to get creative, collecting leaves and bark to use as inspiration for nature artwork. 🎨
The children had so much fun during this excursion, and it just goes to show that getting your little ones involved in nature play doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive – it can be as simple as a trip to your local park or greenspace.🌳
