SUSTAINABLE CHRISTMAS TREE ART IDEAS🎄
Christmas is a time when there can be a lot of excess waste from packaging, wrapping and decorations. We are sharing some TREEriffic ideas from Keiki Hamersley to help you put some of these items to use for Christmas crafts:
📦 Turn your boxes into a Christmas tree: Paint three different sized cardboard boxes green. Stack them with the biggest at the bottom and the smallest at the top and once it is all dry, get to work decorating! Our Hamersley children created baubles from photos of their faces, but you could also collect fallen leaves and flowers for a nature-inspired Christmas tree.
🎄 Make mini trees from cardboard: Cut out triangles from scrap cardboard and give it a coat of paint. Glue buttons, sequins or dried pasta to your tree to look like decorations. Once the glue has dried, create a stand for your Christmas tree by cutting a small slit in the base of your tree and inserting a long, rectangular piece of cardboard into it crossways. Make sure the slit is the height of the cardboard so it stands up without wobbling.
🙌 Create moveable art with loose parts: If you have a child who loves to decorate your Christmas tree then why not provide them with a transient art experience where they can move and manipulate decorations onto a tree to their heart’s content! The Hamersley children used artificial grass off-cuts in the shape of triangles, but you could use a triangle shaped piece of card or draw a tree shape with chalk onto your pavement outside. Provide your child with a selection of decorations which could include baubles, stones, tool parts, leaves, flowers or gum nuts, and let them arrange and rearrange the parts how they like.

KEIKI MINDARIE PRIMARY – Wrapping up our Intergenerational Playgroup for 2024 🎁
This year the children at Keiki Mindarie Primary Preschool have taken part in the Playmates Across Generations pilot program, meeting once a week with residents at Harbourside Village Mindarie for an intergenerational playgroup. Last week was a very special and emotional playgroup not only because it was the last session for the year, but also the last session for the children as they head off to big school in 2024. To mark the occasion, the Harbourside village residents put on a spread of delicious homemade party foods for the children and organised fun games and gifts, everyone had a marvellous time!
It has been so wonderful watching the residents and children build beautiful, meaningful relationships over the year. Each Friday the children were filled with excitement as they knew they would be visiting their special person and spending quality time engaging in crafts, reading books together and doing gardening. The children were very sad to say their goodbyes for the final time.
The Playmates Across Generations pilot program has been a very successful joint project between Keiki Early Learning, @joondaluprotary and Keyton Retirement Living in Harbourside Village Mindarie. We look forward to joining Rotary Joondalup in expanding the program in 2024!

KEIKI TAPPING – A nurturing OSHC within the school community 🌿
This month we are celebrating Keiki Tapping, our newest OSHC service that opened in early 2023! Alongside their daily engaging activities, they also have a passion for fitness and dance, with educators sharing their talents and experience with the children by conducting weekly hip-hop classes.
Keiki Tapping will be providing a wonderful range of incursions and excursions over the summer school holidays, which is open to all local school-aged children. To find out more and download a booking form, visit www.keikiearlylearning.com.au/tapping 🌞

Congratulations to the Class of 2023 🎓
November has been a beautiful celebration for many of our Keiki children as they officially graduated from the Keiki Preschool program ready for primary school in 2024.
Standing up in front of their educators, family members and friends, the children performed a graduation song that left many audience members reaching for the tissues. They then patiently waited for their turn to collect their graduation certificate and gift before celebrating this important milestone with their loved ones. Graduation is such an important ritual in the transition process as children prepare to begin formal schooling. It also celebrates how far the children have come, giving them an opportunity to display their growing confidence, independence and listening skills.
We wish the class of 2023 the best of luck at Kindy and Pre-primary next year, thank you for allowing us to be a part of your early learning journey 🥰

Last weekend we celebrated our long-term Keiki Crew with a high tea by the sea! 28 educators and staff who have worked at Keiki for 5 years or longer were invited to a bottomless high tea with decadent treats and delicious drinks. It was a beautiful afternoon of conversation, laughter and fun.
The Keiki high tea is a much-loved annual tradition and a chance for owners Sam and Angela to recognise the people who have been part of the Keiki journey for many years. We look forward to an even bigger 2024 event as more of our wonderful educators and staff reach their 5-year milestone 💖

KEIKI EDGEWATER – Celebrating Diwali 🪔
Keiki Edgewater was filled with colour and light last week as the children explored Diwali, an Indian festival of light acknowledged by many communities across the world.
In the baby room, the children enjoyed mixing and sifting colourful sand in an experience that drew from the colours and shapes of Diwali fireworks. In the toddler room, the children shared a special celebration with one of their educators who wore her traditional Lehnga dress and explained to the children how she celebrates Diwali with her family at home. The children also used recycled kitchen rolls to paint colourful firework patterns onto the windows.
The pre-kindy children explored Rangoli art, a decoration that is drawn on the floor of home entrances, using coloured sand and flowers on a tuff tray. The educators laid out patterns on the tray and let the children mix the coloured sand creating their own beautiful Rangoli patterns. The kindy children were very excited to learn about this important time of the year alongside one of their peers who celebrates the event with his family. The children made Diya which are salt dough light holders that have tea light candles inside. The holder symbolises the body, and the candle represents the soul. After making the dough and the diya, the children added their own unique designs around the outside.
Celebrating events such as Diwali links to Keiki’s core value of ‘Our Community’ as children expand their understanding of cultures that are different to their own and broaden the children’s awareness of the diversity in our world 🎇

KEIKI GLENDALE – Wildlife encounters 🐍 🐨
Our Glendale children were excited to meet some Australian animals last week when West Oz Wildlife came to visit. They were introduced to Hazel the baby koala, who was cuddled up in her tree branch, and were invited to pat her using their gentle hands. Next, they met Bonnie the python and, if they felt comfortable to, were able to hold and touch her. They also learnt about what snakes eat and how to react if they came across a snake in the wild. The children were excited to see Larry the blue tongue lizard and waited patiently for their turn to stroke his scaly skin. The children were intrigued by the different ways that the animals looked, felt and moved, and listened very carefully as Beth shared information about their lives in the wild.
Keiki Glendale is surrounded by beautiful bushland and this incursion was a wonderful opportunity to not only meet some of the animals that live in these areas but to also understand why we must take care of our natural environment, linking to Keiki’s core value of “Earth to Sky”. Thank you @westozwildlife for coming to visit us!

KEIKI HAMERSLEY – Discovering fruits and vegetables 🥑
Our Hamersley babies have been using their senses to explore whole fruits and vegetables over the past month. From bumpy avocado skin to smooth shoots of asparagus and curly kale, the children have been able to investigate what different fruits and vegetables look like, how they feel, how they smell and – of course – how they taste! Babies explore with their mouths which is helping them to distinguish between the edible and non-edible parts of the fruits and vegetables, such as the bitter rough skin of an orange compared to the sweet, juicy middle. The babies have shown so much interest as they investigate the different foods, using caution with foods that are new to them but knowing exactly what to do with the foods they recognise 🍓🥦

KEIKI EDGEWATER – Children’s Week celebrations 💖
Children’s Week is all about children’s rights to relax, play and take part in activities that they enjoy. To celebrate Children’s Week at Edgewater a week-long program of fun was planned with activities picked by the children and their families. They had crazy hair day where they wore creative hairstyles, superhero and princess dress-up day, cosy pyjama day, loose parts day for constructing magnificent creations and rainbow disco day for the children to party the day away with music, colour and dancing 🌈
Activities were planned to extend on each day’s theme such as making crazy hair artwork and painting, exploring superhero sensory trays, baking a rainbow cake, and role-playing hairdressers and favourite characters. It was a wonderful celebration that acknowledged the children’s interests, skills and talents, and encouraged them to explore new ideas and experiences.

GRANDPARENTS’ DAY 2023 🥰
Over the past week across our Keiki Early Learning services, we have been celebrating Grandparent’s Day by acknowledging the important role grandparents and older role models play in their grandchildren’s lives. The children have absolutely loved welcoming their special visitors for morning and afternoon teas, and spending time showing them around their service.
Some of the activities they enjoyed together included:
🌱 Planting new vegetable seedlings into the garden,
🧁 Decorating cupcakes,
✨ Creating with playdough, sand art, craft and potion making,
📖 Reading stories,
🎶 Joining in with mat sessions and singing songs,
👒 Imaginative play in the home corner,
📸 And posing for photos.
Thank you to all the grandparents and special visitors who came to visit us, we had such a wonderful time!

KEIKI MINDARIE KEYS – Mini doctors for the day 🩺
Over the past few weeks, our Mindarie Keys children have talked with their peers and educators about their experiences at hospital, with some children explaining that they have had surgery and other children describing their parents visits to hospital to have babies. To extend on these discussions the children welcomed Elisha the Fun Nurse for an incursion about what happens when you go to the hospital or get hurt.
Nurse Elisha asked the children what they know about hospitals and emergency services and the children were very confident to respond with how to phone “000” and who you can help you by calling that number. The nurse then brought out her bear which had a heartbeat inside of it. They took turns listening to the heartbeat and were also able to check its blood pressure. The children listened carefully as Nurse Elisha explained all about the different tools you may come across in a hospital and the types of people that work them. Afterwards the children got to work with the tools helping to heal the sick bears she brought in, suiting up in doctor gowns and hats and getting straight to work! One child held the thermometer under the bear`s armpit, said it had a temperature and asked for some medicine. Another child discovered that by using the stethoscope she could hear her peer`s heartbeat, so she went around the table and asked her friends and educators if she could hear theirs.
It was amazing watching the children provide medical care to the bears and it blew us away how much they already knew without prompting from the nurse or educators. They also enjoyed the experience of riding on wheelchairs and using crutches. This sparked some interesting conversations for the remainder of the day.
The Fun Nurse is a mum and a clinical nurse at Perth Children’s Hospital. She provides fun and educational sessions about what happens when children attend the doctors or hospital with hope to reduce fear and anxiety in children. For helpful hints and tips, follow the Fun Nurse on Facebook or Instagram.

KEIKI CATALINA – Observing the life cycle of birds 🪺 🐣
The beautiful gardens at Keiki Catalina aren’t just attractive for the children, the birds love them too! Recently our toddlers were delighted to spot a nest in one of the trees in their outdoor space. Over the past two weeks they have been keeping a close eye on the nest, identifying two shiny white eggs inside and then seeing two spotted dove hatchlings being cared for by their mum.
This has been a wonderful opportunity for the children to observe the lifecycle of a bird while also learning to respect and care for the animals that live in the natural spaces around us 🌳
